"The Shunned House" is a horror novella by H.P. Lovecraft, published in 1928. The story follows a narrator and his uncle, Dr. Elihu Whipple, as they investigate a mysterious house in Providence, Rhode Island with a dark history of deaths and illness among its residents dating back to the 1700s.
The story combines Lovecraft's typical themes of family curses and malevolent ancient forces with elements of vampire lore and local New England history. Like many of Lovecraft's works, the story was inspired by a real location - a house that still stands on Benefit Street in Providence, though the supernatural elements are, of course, fictional.
